COMPLAINTS from ramblers that Yorkshire Water has asphalted the Pennine Way have been refuted by water bosses.
Country lovers claim part of the historic route near Hebden Bridge looks like a motorway after being surfaced.
But in a statement Yorkshire Water says: "We have reinstated a small access track running parallel to the Pennine Way which, in the past, has been used as an alternative route by ramblers seeking easier going underfoot.
"The track, which also provides access to farm and a private dwelling, has been eroded by ongoing maintenance work at the site to ensure Yorkshire Water meets its obligations under the Reservoirs Act, 1975.
"There is not only a need to provide a sound access track for our operational purposes, but we are obliged to reinstate the track to a reasonable level for those who rely on it for access to properties.
"However, we are aware that ramblers use the access track as an alternative to the original Pennine Way and will discuss their concerns with them."
Maintenance work has been carried out on the company's three reservoirs at Lower, Middle and Upper Walshaw Dean.
