A SMARTLY-dressed woman who posed as a social worker and tried to get access to a baby is still being sought by police.

The incident happened at 4.45pm on Monday when the woman called at the home of Patrick and Catherine Leonard in Glen Street, Colne.

She claimed to be a social worker and said she had come to check their baby.

Mr Leonard said he wanted proof of identification before he would let her in to see their eight-month-old daughter Jennah-Louise. After being confronted, she calmly walked back down the road, saying she was going to her car to get her identification. She never returned.

Police are appealing for anyone who recognises the woman's description to contact them.

They are also warning parents to be on their guard and check out any caller before letting them into their house.

The woman was 5ft 5in, with sandy-coloured shoulder-length hair tied back in a pony tail. She was slim and wore a black jacket, a white blouse with a frill down the front and a black skirt. She had a local accent.

Anyone who saw the woman or knows her identity should contact Pendle police on 01282 863161.
