ADRIAN Heath will have to sell before he can buy as he bids to strengthen his promotion-chasing squad.

The Clarets boss is unlikely to receive further cash assistance with the clock ticking towards next month's transfer deadline day.

Heath said: "If I could go out and buy a £300,000 player I would do it tomorrow. But we have to be realistic and realise we just haven't got that sort of money.

"I've got a couple of players that I'd like to bring in but there are financial constraints in the transfer market. I understand the situation."

Heath added: "We might be able to put a player plus cash deal together and work it that way but I cannot just go out and spend £300,000 or £400,000 on one player."

Meanwhile, Glen Little is unlikely to feature at the weekend after suffering a further injury to his toe in training.

Gerry Harrison is also struggling with a troublesome ankle injury. And skipper Nigel Gleghorn faced an anxious wait today to see if he will play again this season.

Gleghorn was injured in Saturday's 0-0 draw at Bournemouth and had a scan last night to try and diagnose the extent of the injury.

The Turf Moor captain already faces a six week lay-off and Clarets physio Andy Jones confirmed: "We will know the extent of the damage in the next 24 hours.

"The knee appears to be settling down a bit and we are still hopeful that he will play again this season."

The news is a fresh blow to Burnley's promotion chances arriving less than a week after Vince Overson was ruled out with an Achilles tendon injury.

Gleghorn has been an ever-present in the side since the attacking midfielder joined Burnley from Stoke City on a free transfer last summer.

Meanwhile, Heath has sounded a Second Division battlecry as the Clarets prepare for Saturday's home game against Bristol Rovers at Turf Moor. Burnley slipped to ninth place in the table after Chesterfield's 1-1 draw with struggling Rotherham at Saltergate last night.

But Heath told the Turf Moor support: "I can assure our fans that we are not throwing the towel in.

"There are still a lot of points to play for and there is nothing in the rule book to say that we can't win all of our games.

"Regardless of what people may think we are still in a very good position in the table.

"I still remain very confident that we can still get promotion. If, in five games time the situation is still the same, I'll hold my hand up and say that's impossible.

"But at the moment the prize is still out there for us."

Burnley Reserves' Pontins League game against Hull City at Turf Moor tonight has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
