CENTENARIAN Mary Hawley celebrates her 100th birthday with another stalwart of the town - Darwen Tower.

And to honour the former weaver's birthday on Sunday, Blackburn Mayor, councillor Mary Leaver, will present Mary with a miniature model of the Darwen landmark.

But despite the Mayor's visit, a telegram from the Queen and a family party at her residential home on Salisbury Road, Darwen, the spirited centenarian is unmoved by the celebrations.

She said: "I'm not at all bothered by any of it. I have all my friends here."

Warden, Katie Moffat, has arranged for Mary's 77-year-old grandson, Granville, from the West Midlands to join the party as well as her grand daughter from Southampton, and Darwen MP Janet Anderson.

And despite Mary's defiance, Mrs Moffat believes the aimiable pensioner is looking forward to the celebrations.

She said: "I'm sure she is getting very excited and will enjoy every minute of it."
