CANADIAN giant Todd Bidner could be the key to Blackburn Hawks' chances of making a strong impact on the national ice hockey play-offs.

So says player coach Jim Pennycook as the local side gear up for the opening play-off date with Murrayfield Royals at the Arena on Saturday night.

Hawks' season has taken a dramatic upturn since Bidner arrived and Pennycook says: "It's no coincidence - Todd is a quality player and he has lifted everyone, both players in the team and spectators.

"He has a presence on the ice and knows the game inside out."

That experience, gained over 12 seasons in the British game, is invaluable and he has adapted brilliantly to our style. The crowd love him too and he, along with everyone else, is raring to go."

Pennycook's only worry leading up to the Murrayfield match centres around his own fitness.

"I have had a frustrating time with my ankle injury and it is touch and go whether I will feature at the weekend. I feel I am letting people down by sitting things out and if there is any chance of playing then I will be out there with the boys."

Hawks go into the opening game with confidence high after a stunning end of season run which produced a run of fine wins.
