A REPORT to the council's Development Committee tonight (Thursday, February 20) highlights a growing economic upturn in St Helens town centre.

During the past 12 months a survey has revealed that the number of vacant shop units has dropped and there has been 'considerable' public and private activity. The number of town centre users is also up by 15 per cent.

Chair of Development, Councillor John Fletcher, says: "The report is yet another indicator that St Helens is enjoying sustained economic growth."

Further good news for the town centre is the council's success in its bid for £5 million of Capital Challenge money to help carry out an £8 million package of improvements to Newton and St Helens town centres.

The Capital Challenge cash will safeguard thousands of jobs and also create new ones. Work will be carried out as part of a three-year programme.

The major schemes are:

Completion of Phase 5 of inner ring road to complete the town centre link.

Environmental works to improve the attractiveness of Ormskirk Street, Bridge Street and Westfield Street.

Extensive environmental upgrading of Victoria Square and Traffic limitation.

Traffic calming measures in Hardshaw Street.

Further safety and security projects including more CCTV equipment (security cameras) and lighting will also be carried out.
