WINGER Tim Brown sparked a romp for Tyldesley RU. He swept in for a quickfire try, then banged over six goals to capture the MoM award from match sponsor Gerald Platt.

It all added up to a thumping 50-10 victory over Keswick, the Cumbrians having no answer to the power of the home pack and the pace of the backs.

Brown's early penalty and try set the scene, and Tyldesley continued to turn the screw with Craig Pulman barged his way over the line.

Centres Stewart Manning and Mark Swanton had a field day; a superb reverse pass from Manning put Swanton in under the posts.

Tyldesley then went quiet and allowed Keswick 10 easy points.

The second period started slowly but when Skipper Dave Sivill went in for a try the floodgates opened with Lee Cunliffe, Lee Berrisford, and Swanton also touching down.

Tyldesley will be hoping to continue their surge on Saturday (2.30pm) when they take on second-placed St Benedicts at Well Street.

Tyldesley 3rds scored a 12-11 success at Aspull.

Culcheth RU fell 13-12 at North Manchester despite sterling efforts from Dave Pitt and Gareth Walton.

Rennett and Lane scored tries, but the team will need to improve if they are to trouble Newton on Saturday.

Atherton RU, unbeaten in 1997, beat Eccles 9-5 thanks to a trio of penalties from Ian Lysons. They then beat Ruskin Park 31-10, bouncing back from a 10-point deficit with tries by Jonathan Sutton 2, Joe Dutton, Matthew Parr, Wayne Clough and goalkicker Lysons.

The U7s beat Eccles with Cory Duddle scoring a try and good support from Scott Fazackerley and Damon Robinson; the U9s lost to Eccles; good games from Scott Croft, Sam Brewer, Ryan Brett and Alex Williamson; the U12s lost to Eccles; sound games from Liam Grimshaw and Wayne Lythgoe plus a brilliant solo try from Lee James.

Leigh RU fell 12-7 at Old Salians despite a sparkling start when Ross Bullough dashed in between the sticks, Mark Hudspith converting. But the homesters hit back to level at the break.

Leigh should have settled in with their opportunities in the second half, but a catalogue of errors let them down. And Salians made the most of their one chance to win it.

Leigh 3rd beat Old Salians 39-5, dominating from the first minute. Tries from Kelly, Keegan, Egerton 2, Yates, Bird and Tustin, Greenough hitting two conversions.

Leigh Tofts lost 22-0 against Ormskirk.
