STAUNCH Bury FC supporter Kate Giffard showed her true colours when she turned down a behind-the-scenes tour of Manchester United's Old Trafford ground in favour of her home-town club.

The 16-year-old beat off strong opposite to win first prize in a BBC GMR Talk radio competition to find the "Young Sports Journalist of the Year".

Besides the tour of Old Trafford, the prize also offered the winner the chance to shadow a GMR Talk reporter on a big match day and put together a 60-second report that will be aired on the radio.

"There was no way I was going to go to Old Trafford, but I thought it would ruin my chances of winning the competition if I said anything, so I kept my mouth shut," explained the A-level student. "I hate United!"

She will now be shown round Bury's Gigg Lane ground instead.

Kate, of South Royd Street, Tottington, has been a season ticket holder at Bury since she was a young girl and her report on her local team helped clinch the top spot.

Her request will now allow GMR Talk to kill two birds with one stone as, as luck would have it, the other part of the prize is a VIP family day out to watch Swinton Lions, who ground share with the Shakers at Gigg.

At a date yet to be arranged, Kate will sit in the press box to watch a Bury home tie and put together a 60-second report of the match that will be aired on the radio station.

"It would be more helpful for me to report on my own team and see how the professionals do their match reports," concluded Kate.
