WILF MORGAN was one of Briarcroft's Fit Young Men. He worked at Nook Pit, but his bond with the club began when, as a trainee, he joined to learn first aid.

"I used to cycle across the fields from my home in Pickley Green, Westleigh," he said.

In the 1950s he was an enthusiastic member of Briarcroft's bodybuilding club, but Wilf, who now lives in Langdale Street, Leigh, was also "dragged into drama."

He explained: "The Occasional Players were performing a play at the hall. They needed people to carry a body offstage and I was the obvious choice since I was there on the first aid course."
