ST HELENS Hockey Club beat Prescot 2-1 to clinch the Lace Mawer League Division Six North title.

Dave Aspinall created the first chance for St Helens after 12 minutes. He picked up the ball in his own half, beat the Prescot defence only to see his powerful shot superbly saved by the Prescot keeper.

The St Helens opener came on 19 minutes. After some neat interchange of passing involving Paul Smith and Dave Aspinall, the ball was played to central midfielder Paul Dobson. Dobson picked the ball up and drove into the Prescot D and then coolly flicked the ball past the Prescot keeper.

The goal seemed to give Prescot a lift and within 10 minutes were back on level terms scoring from a penalty corner.

St Helens picked their game in the second half, with the defence of sweeper James Lyons, Tony Chaffer, Dave Lewin and Alan Thomas all in commanding mood, with keeper Mike Hall stopping any attacks Prescot had to offer. St Helens scored their winner, and along with it the Championship, mid-way through the second half. Having been awarded a penalty corner, the ball was played out to Alan Travis, Paul Dobson passed the ball to Dave Aspinall who flicked a perfect ball past the on-rushing Prescot keeper.
