PEOPLE worried about fire cover in Padiham and Hapton have received a reassurance from Lancashire's chief fire officer.

Gordon Russel said building fires would continue to be attended by two fire engines - a practice which exceeds government recommendations.

He was responding to a petition attempting to influence a county-wide review of fire cover.

The signatures were handed to MP Peter Pike, who pressed for a response from the County Council.

Mr Pike told residents that the issue was of great concern to him and said he hoped Mr Russel's comments would ally fears of cuts.

Mr Russel said: "The petition demonstrates the level of natural concern in Padiham but may I take this opportunity to reassure that the standard of fire cover in their community will remain above the minimum standards recommended by the Home Office."

He said that all areas' needs were being assessed annually.
