A discount parking scheme was launched in Morecambe this week, with more than 40 local stores taking part. When shoppers park they will get tickets which entitle them to discounts on goods at certain stores. Many local retailers have signed up for the scheme, including Tesco, and Boots are looking into becoming members.

It is hoped the scheme will entice shoppers into Morecambe where they can get discounts on goods and effectively park for free.

Originally, the plans were drawn up to solve the rows over Lancaster's park and ride scheme but not enough shops agreed to take part and Morecambe retailers hope the discount scheme will help boost their trade.

Said Cllr Albert Roberts: "I think the scheme will be a great benefit to retailers in Morecambe, particularly when surrounding towns and villages get to know that shopkeepers in the scheme give a discount on purchases. It will of course be particularly attractive to local shoppers."

He added: "I think the way local traders have embraced the scheme speaks very well for their spirit and willingness to help themselves. The scheme is initially for a trial period of 12 months and I feel sure than it will prove a permanent attraction for shoppers in Morecambe."

The idea was piloted by Lancaster Council with Morecambe Chamber of Trade encouraging its members to take part.
