A MASSIVE recruitment drive - Operation 10,000 - has been launched to encourage thousands of people to volunteer their time for The Samaritans.

And although it is hoped 10,000 people will respond to the call from across the nation, a substantial number is needed along the Fylde Coast.

Over the past four years the number of volunteers in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre has shrunk by five per cent, while there have been 40 per cent more calls to local Samaritans.

Jenny Brookes, director of the Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre branch, said: "More volunteers are needed urgently so we can meet the increased demand on our service with confidence.

"We also have a need to replace around 20 per cent of our volunteers on an annual basis.

"There will always be a turnover of volunteers - people move away or need a break.

"As the number of charities increases, there are also more organisations seeking the time and talents of voluntary workers."

To be a volunteer, no qualifications or previous experience are required and listening volunteers must have the ability to listen without judgment.

They must be committed to three three-hour duties and one overnight duty each month and the minimum age for volunteers is 17.

Anyone wishing to become a Samaritan volunteer, either listening or fund-raising should contact Blackpool's Edward Street branch on 22218, or call the volunteer hotline on 0990 627282.
