A COMPANY director who killed himself had business and financial problems none of his family knew about, an inquest was told.

Wednesday's hearing (April 30) heard that father-of-two Mr Atwell Cordeiro, of Randale Drive, Sunnybank, Bury, died after taking seven times the amount of painkillers reported to be lethal.

Recording a verdict of "suicide" on Mr Cordeiro (35), Rochdale District Coroner Mr Barrie Williams stated: "Unknown to his family, Mr Cordeiro was experiencing some financial and business difficulties and while his children were at their grandparents and his wife was at a friend's it appears he took the opportunity, while alone, of overdosing significantly.

"Even without a note, the indications were of his determination to take his own life."

His wife Nassim told the Rochdale inquest: "It was only after his death I learned of his business difficulties and the extent of them."

Mrs Cordeiro found her Kenyan-born husband, director of an alarms company, lying on the settee on February 16. Mr Cordeiro had been prescribed painkillers for back pain following a car accident over a month before his death.
