THE UK's aerospace industry is in danger of extinction unless the Eurofighter gets the go-ahead from the German government, a union leader warned today.

Works convener John Deans, who represents British Aerospace workers in the county, told a press conference in Paris that the green light from Germany for the production phase of the Eurofighter was crucial.

He said: "We see the Eurofighter as the foundation stone for the Europeanisation of the aerospace industry which faces a massive threat from the US."

The press conference was held at the Paris Air Show by union leaders from the four nations involved in the £35 billion project to increase pressure on the German government to agree to funding for the next stage.

The unions warned that up to 70,000 European jobs depend on the Eurofighter. Mr Deans said local companies risked going out of business unless a quick decision was made.
