THE battle to save Burnley's century-old Victoria Hospital was lost.

District health bosses voted for temporary closure of the major hospital unit as part of an emergency plan to get the authority off its financial sick-bed.

But their survival package to slash £1.3 million from the budget and balance the books was immediately branded "a fairy-tale scheme" by health campaigners.
