A HUSBAND and wife suffered chest injuries when their car was "sandwiched" in a four car pile-up on a busy country road.

The accident happened on the A56 Colne Road, Kelbrook, between Great Hague Farm and the Old Stone Trough Inn, yesterday.

Police said an Austin Metro being driven towards Foulridge by Christopher Norris, 21, of Castle Road, Colne, was overtaking a Ford Escort when the Austin driver lost control and was in collision with the rear of the Ford.

The Escort also span out of control and was in collision with a Citroen BX coming in the opposite direction. A Land Rover Discovery then collided with the Citroen.

The road was closed while police and ambulances cleared the scene.

The Escort driver, Christine Thomson, 37, of Rainhall Crescent, Barnoldswick, suffered broken ribs and bruising. She was taken to Burnley General Hospital but released after treatment.

A couple in the Citroen, driver Gerald Bebb, 68, of Tottington, Bury, and his wife May, 66, were also treated at the hospital for chest injuries before being discharged.

Mr Norris and the driver of the Land Rover, Lisa Howarth, 27, of Habergham Street, Burnley, both escaped injury.
