West Sutton 14 Trafford SMOB 4 WEST Sutton had to battle against the elements and a stubborn Trafford side before they finally clinched their place in the quarter-final of the North West Counties Cup.

Indeed, Trafford grabbed a four-point lead after they touched down in the corner.

Wests struggled to control the ball. And when S. McNamara and K. Grounds made inroads into the Trafford half, the it went loose with the line at their mercy.

Then prop Paul Shuttleworth broke clear for 30 yards before passing to full-back Craig Jones who raced 25 yards to the line. Greg Stubbs converted.

After another good break by Paul Ward a quick play-the-ball saw Willie Johnson make space for loose-forward G. Hammon to score under the sticks and Stubbs added the extras.

With half-time approaching, Stubbs landed a penalty goal to make it 14-4.

Wests continued to attack the Trafford line, but after good work by Leyland, Wilburn and Jones the final ball went astray.

With the weather worsening, Wests continued to attack, but they were unable to add to their score.

The Reprise man of the match was Sean McNamara and he was well supported by Jones, Hammon and Ward.
