WIGAN'S first lady has given her backing to the borough's biggest ever programme of events for International Women's Week.

The Mayoress of Wigan, Mrs Joan Pye, praised organisers of the special week which is aimed at giving hundreds of local women the chance to try their hand at new activities.

Mrs Pye said: "Across the borough there are many excellent events which will give women a taste of what is on offer.

"Some are sports led, some health led, while others are fun or designed to help women follow a particular interest.

"A common feature of many events is the partnership between the various voluntary organisations, health services and the council.

"There is bound to be something for everyone, and I do hope many women will be able to join me in taking part.

"I must congratulate the far-sightedness of the people who have organised the week.

"Now it's up to us to take advantage of the opportunities on offer. Let's make International Women's Week the start of many new interests."

Activities include: swimming at all the borough's baths, talks/drama about African women's culture, dealing with exam stress for young women, indoor bowling, circus workshops, the art of relaxation, and much more.

The celebrations reach their peak on Sunday, March 8 which has been designated International Women's Day.

How Bridge Sports Centre is staging a day of fun and activities especially for women, ranging from Tai Chi to line dancing, and from volleyball to archery.

There will also be many supervised activities for children, advice on health and dietary issues.
