UNIQUE paintings from the 1990 World Cup are set to score with the crowds at an exciting Preston football exhibition.

Colourful prints depicting greats from soccer's history have been lent to organisers by the Professional Football Association.

The rare pieces will take centre stage with other memorabilia at Goal which kicks off at the Museum of Lancashire on Stanley Street on May 18, with a little help from the £11 million Football Museum planned for Deepdale.

The display aims to entertain and educate people about the history of the world's most famous trophy.

Football Museum director Kevin Moore said: "When the World Cup comes around it takes over everything. We will be looking at who invented it, previous winners and the whole history.

"We'll have sublime memories and a chance to re-live the bad ones such as England's defeat by America in 1950. That's what the World Cup is about."

Mr Moore added: "We had hoped the Football Museum would open in time for the World Cup but there was a delay getting Lottery money.

"But we still felt it was important to do something. We've got the collection and the Museum of Lancashire has the space so we got together.

"It'll be a chance for us to get ideas and comments from people. It's a taste of what's to come."

The exhibition will finish in September.
