NEW signing Callum Davidson has started training and is raring to go!

The Scottish Under 21 international joined up with his teammates on the training pitch for the first time on Thursday - and now has dreams of stepping out in the famous blue and white shirt.

But whether it is with the first team squad at Leeds United next Wednesday or with the Reserves against Aston Villa on the same night it is too early to say.

Rovers' latest recruit has been confined to the sidelines since his dream £1.75 million move from St Johnstone to Ewood Park last month with a niggling hamstring injury.

But the left back is biting at the bit to break into the team and turn up the heat on current first choice left back Gary Croft - although he admits he faces an uphill struggle.

Davidson, 21, said: "I realise it is going to be tough for me to get into the first team as Gary is playing very well and is an excellent player. But if I did not think I was up to the challenge I would not have come here.

"I can't wait to play my first game for Rovers but as I have only started training this week it is too early to say whether or not I will play next week.

"These have been a frustrating couple of weeks for me because I just want to play. I watched the Leicester City game from the stands on Saturday and I was aching to get on."

While breaking into the Rovers first team is his main priority, he also has hopes of full international honours. But chances of joining Rovers Scottish trio Colin Hendry, Kevin Gallacher and Billy McKinlay in the Scottish World Cup party are slim.

He added: "My main aim has got to be getting into the Rovers first team and hopefully when I do the national team manager will come and have a look at me. But I can't see myself getting into the Scotland side for a while yet."

The left back slot has been Roy Hodgson's problem position all season. Patrick Valery played 12 of the first 15 games of the season but has since been struggling with injury.

And while Croft has made the position his own since then, Hodgson's decision to experiment with Jason Wilcox in the role in recent games proves he is not completely satisfied.

But Davidson is the first to admit that he is not the automatic solution to the problem.

He added: "Compared to St Johnstone, competition for places here is very high so I know I have to work very hard to get my chance.

"For it is not just Gary I am competing against; there is also Patrick Valery and both are very good players."

Rovers have no game on Saturday after being knocked out of the FA Cup so Hodgson will be hoping Tim Flowers, Stephane Henchoz and McKinlay are all fit for the trip to Leeds and to avenge the astonishing 4-3 home defeat they suffered in September.
