LEIGH Eagles need a final game win to force a play-off for Division One runners-up spot in the Leigh & District Amateur Football League.

They missed out on Saturday when they went down 3-2 at home against nearest rivals Leigh Phoenix A in the day's only game.

Victory took Phoenix into second place - but they left it late and secured the points with literally the last kick of the game.

Clinton Andrews and Greg Anderson netted for the Eagles, Wayne Pitchford, Scott Mulcrow and Neil Thompson scored for Phoenix.

The Eagles must beat Royal Oak on Saturday to force a play off. If they don't win Phoenix finish second.

This match will be played at Atherton Collieries because the council took posts down on Metro pitches on Monday.

The Metro refused a request to keep posts up on a local pitch for an extra week so the league could fulfil its program.

Disgruntled League secretary Steve Speakman said: "It is little wonder the Leisure Department has few friends in Leigh.

"A little closer to Wigan itself three grounds with multiple fields have extensions to their season - Laithwaite Park, Little Lane and Williams Fosters being the facilities concerned."

ATHERTON Charity Cup's round one game between Daisy Hill and Howe Bridge was abandoned after two ambulances were called for separate injuries.

Referee Norman Lea had no choice but to abandon the match after 61 minutes with the game standing at 1-1.
