RAINFORD Cricket Club's first and second teams' games both fell victim to the weather on Saturday.

But it wasn't before they had the chance to put themselves in powerful positions.

The first XI visited Aughton where the home side won the toss and decided to bat on a flat track.

But from that moment on it was Rainford all the way. Opening bowlers Finney and Corden did the early damage and then veteran seamer Schofield joined the party as Aughton were reduced to 74-6 from 39 overs before the rain came and denied Rainford victory.

The second XI suffered a similar fate at home to Orrell. After restricting the visitors to 180-7, veteran Gallagher grabbing four wickets, the home side had reached 10-1 from just one over when the rains came and brought a premature halt to proceedings.

On Sunday the second XI were victorious against Winstanley Park in their quest to retain the Pochin Cup. Park batted first and were dismissed for 92 with Phil Curran plundering four wickets and Fogarty and Ford claiming two apiece.

In reply, inspirational skipper John Williams led from the front with a chanceless unbeaten half century and Eaton showed glimpses of the form that brought him first team honours two years ago with a hard hitting 29, as Rainford powered to a one sided eight wicket success.

On the honour front Young Mark Williams has followed in the footsteps of his father John and been selected to represent Lancashire County Cricket Club at junior level.

Mark has attended numerous trials at Old Trafford which this week culminated in his selection for the newly formed Lancashire Primary XI.
