ANGRY Sheelagh Burdus has launched a one-woman campaign to save a bridge from closure.

Council notices have been sent out to some Mill Hill residents warning that Primrose Hill bridge has been earmarked for closure and asking for their views.

The bridge is already closed on safety grounds while Blackburn With Darwen Council assesses the extent of structural problems.

But Sheelagh said if the bridge was shut permanently, traffic congestion would increase and local businesses suffer. She added: "The bridge is a short cut for local residents and well-used by the people who know it. The council has sent notification letters to some residents but only those who live in the two blocks nearest the bridge.

"Closure will affect a lot more people than that. The roads around here are busy enough without losing this short-cut."

Sheelagh has started a petition against the council's plans and vowed to do everything she can to save the bridge.

She said: "I've started this on my own and so far have 50 signatures but a lot of people will be affected if the bridge closes and I'm sure this campaign will get their backing."

Residents have until October 15 to object to the council's plans and Sheelagh is urging everyone to make their views known before it is too late.
