A COMPANY offering environmentally-friendly funerals is the latest entrant in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph's Grimewatch awards.

Baker's Funeral Service in Hammerton Street, Burnley, has been supplying biodegradable coffins, fittings and garments for the last 14 months, alongside traditional products.

Director Alec Baker (left) said there was a growing interest in such products as people become more environmentally-aware.

He said: "My project is a business and must be financially viable, but I hope it is a change of direction for our profession. It increases choices for bereaved families.

The company is one of many being considered for a Grimewatch award, run in association with Tidy Britain Group, Groundwork, the Environment Agency and British Aerospace. They reward schemes which aim to make East Lancs a nicer place to live. There are categories for businesses, local authorities, community groups and schools.

If you want to enter, contact Grimewatch co-ordinator Lynn Schofield by phone on 01254 678678 ext 244 from 9.30am to 12.30pm Mondays and Thursdays. Messages can be left at other times.

She can also be reached by fax on 01254 680429 or e-mail on grimewatch@aol.com.
