GUIDED tours of the Water Power Trail along Pendle Water are being offered this weekend and next.

The walks have been organised by REEL -- River Enhancement East Lancashire -- which is working to improve the waterside environment.

The trail, launched in 1995, focuses on the area's industrial heritage through highlighting the sites of early water-powered mills.

Project co-ordinator Judy Yacoub said: "Most of these mills are long gone, but they were the precursor to the industrial revolution and in their day put Pendle on the map.

"Water power was the key to economic growth.

"This fascinating history is often overlooked, and REEL's long term aim is to provide interpretation through a series of information panels, and to extend the trail into Burnley and Hyndburn."

Guided walks take place tomorrow and Saturday October 10.

Led by Shaun Chippendale, the treks start from Pendle Heritage Centre at Barrowford at 11am and will include a tour of Lomeshaye village with local historian Peter Mullings.

The walks are free of charge and weatherproof clothing and walking boots are recommended.

Anyone wanting to walk the trail by themselves can get a self-guide leaflet from Pendle Heritage Centre.
