VILLAGERS in Worsthorne have a new footpath through the village square, thanks to the efforts of local green-minded volunteers.

The Worsthorne Best Kept Village Group, made up entirely of volunteers, was set up by local people who wanted to improve the appearance of the village.

In the past they have organised litter picks and bulb-planting sessions.

Members' big project this year has been to build a footpath linking the road to Burnley and the road to Nelson in the village centre.

The project was paid for by grants from Rural Action and Lancashire Environmental Action Fund, as well as some cash won by the group for its environmental work in recent years.

The group has entered the Lancashire Evening Telegraph's Grimewatch competition.

The contest, run in association with Tidy Britain Group, British Aerospace, Groundwork and the Environment Agency, rewards all kinds of environmental projects.

Entries are accepted from any individual or organisation which has helped to make East Lancashire a greener place to live.

If you have undertaken such a project, let Grimewatch co-ordinator Lynn Schofield know.

She can be contacted by telephone on 01254 678678 ext 244, Mondays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Messages can be left at other times.

You can also send her faxes on 01254 680429, or e-mail her at grimewatch@aol.com.
