A LATE comment on the matter of the old people's homes due to be closed by Blackburn Council.
When I was in the nursing profession, at one time there were wholesale movements of long-stay patients due to changes in government legislation.
Friendships were broken up, causing heartache. In the case of the elderly, this resulted in an increase in the death-rate.
On another occasion, a senior nurse in charge of Rossendale General Hospital moved elderly patients at a bad time of the year to decorate the wards, again resulting in death of patients. For this indiscretion he was disciplined and demoted.
Who is to be held accountable for the disruption in the lives of the elderly in Blackburn at present? It seems that politics, money and administrative convenience take precedence over people.
Or is the idea to reduce the numbers and therefore the need for homes for elderly people?
