STAFF at the North West's green watchdog will be on duty round the clock this Christmas to deal with environmental problems.

The Environment Agency's regional communications centre in Warrington will operate throughout the festive period to deal with calls.

Environment protection staff will be on stand-by to respond to any water pollution incidents and will be on the lookout for illegal fly-tipping, particularly in areas where waste disposal and recycling sites are closed. Flood warning officers will monitor river levels and fisheries enforcement staff will be checking for poachers.

Justin McCracken, the agency's North West general manager, said: "We ensure the environment is protected 365 days a year and this work will continue through the festive period."

Environmental problems can be reported on the agency's free emergency hotline on 0800 807060.
