LEIGH RMI suffered their first defeat in 10 league games - but manager Steve Waywell was still buoyant.

Gainsboro scored a goal in each half for a 2-0 win, victory perhaps hinging on a referee's decision when he disallowed Ian Monk's header just after the break.

"His header went over the keeper and there were two defenders on the line, so it is difficult to understand why he gave offside," said Waywell. "But overall it was a massive improvement on our recent performances.

"The build-up was good, we got plenty of ball into the box, but we couldn't just get the final touch to finish.

"It didn't just happen for us on the day, and I was disappointed with the way we gave away two free kicks that led to their two goals."

The first came two minutes before the interval when Graham Hill conceded a free kick in a dangerous position, the second came as Mick Wallace sliced into his own goal in an attempt to clear.

ATHERTON COLLS lost their way in their 3-0 defeat against Mossley in the North West Trains First Division.

"It was like we weren't there in the second half," lamented team boss Alan Lord. "We were out-played and out-thought. On the plus side Mark Fitton had an excellent game in midfield and in goalkeeper David Rouse I feel we've unearthed a real gem."

ATHERTON LR also lost 3-0, their defeat at Vauxhall GM.

"We held them for an hour then both centre halves were injured," said LR's Steve Cunningham. "Neil Wallace gashed a knee, Mike Smith injured an ankle and then man of the match Dave Chadwick pulled up with another ankle problem."
