MARLON Broomes vowed today to learn from his mistakes after suffering a red-card "nightmare" at Stamford Bridge.

The 21-year-old Blackburn Rovers defender was involved in a confrontation with veteran Gianluca Vialli on Wednesday and paid a heavy price for reacting angrily to a foul by the Chelsea player-manager.

"I was distraught, it didn't even enter my head that I would be sent off," said Broomes.

"He caught me in the face after I had knocked the ball out and I just wanted to tell him off for what he had done.

"I probably got hold of him and shouldn't have done. But he started rolling about as if I had hit him.

"It was a nightmare really, I wasn't even thinking about a yellow card and I couldn't believe it when it was red.

"I've never been sent off for Blackburn before, I don't get too many yellow cards. Now I am going to lose my place while I am banned.

"But you have to learn from your mistakes. Even though I didn't think I deserved a red card, I shouldn't have reacted. I know that now."

Broomes will start a three-match suspension from Wednesday, March 3, but there are some crucial games before then, starting tomorrow against Sheffield Wednesday at Ewood. And the England under-21 defender, who has been in superb form starting to fulfil all his potential, knows he must leave manager Brian Kidd with a good impression.

He looks likely to start against Wednesday but Rovers have a few players to check.

Chris Sutton is one, having hurt an ankle on Wednesday, and he will be given until tomorrow morning to prove his fitness.

Stephane Henchoz has been having treatment on a thigh injury but is expected to be available.

And Callum Davidson could be back in with a chance, depending on his hamstring.

But Billy McKinlay's long-term groin problems are still causing concern and he is out for the visit of Wednesday.

Kidd will probably delay his team selection as late as possible.

They are expected to choose from: Filan, Kenna, Henchoz, Broomes, Croft, Gillespie, McAteer, Dunn, Marcolin, Jansen, Sutton, Ward, Duff, Peacock, Blake, Davies, Davidson, Flowers.

Ashley Ward, who scored a superb pointsaving goal at Chelsea, comes up against his former Barnsley boss Danny Wilson, who also wanted to sign him for Wednesday when Rovers moved in.

"He was a brilliant manager for us at Barnsley and although I wasn't there when he took them up, it was an unbelievable achievement," he said. "I was very impressed by him and he was one of the best managers I've worked for.

"I could understand him leaving Barnsley for Wednesday.

"He used to play for them and obviously has a lot of affection for the club as well as wanting the chance to work on a bigger stage."

Wednesday's main injury concern surrounds England left back Andy Hinchcliffe (knee). If he is still absent, they could be unchanged.

Their squad is: Pressman, Atherton, Walker, Emerson, Stefanovic, Alexandersson, Sonner, Jonk, Rudi, Carbone, Booth, Briscoe, Newsome, Humphreys, Agogo, Hinchcliffe, Clarke.
