future A VISION of the future through the eyes of youngsters will form part of millennium celebrations in East Lancashire thanks to a lottery grant.

Lancashire County Council has won £50,000 from the Millennium Festival Fund which will be spent on a project which asks young people what kind of world they would want to live in in the next century.

Teachers, youth workers, and voluntary youth groups are being asked to invite their pupils and members to give a presentation interpreting their ideal world to a panel of county councillors and Lancashire church leaders.

Feedback so far shows that the main topics concerning young people involve the environment, technology and social problems.

The panel will select up to 40 groups to present their vision at a showcase celebration, staged by the county council and the Churches Together group, during the year 2000.

County Coun John West, leader of the council, said: "We will be appointing an event management company to take this project further and develop it into a £300,000 showcase for Lancashire.

"We want to make an important statement about the future of Lancashire involving the young people of the county who will be responsible for its success in the millennium."
