A WORRIED father has demanded action after a traffic island designed to slow down speeding motorists outside his house was demolished by a wagon.

Peter Warren, of Longsight Road, Copster Green, claimed that, far from putting the brakes on speeding traffic, the islands were putting residents' lives at risk.

The islands were introduced following a string of accidents, one in which a local woman was killed while walking her dog.

Mr Warren said speeding wagons meant road conditions were now "diabolical".

He added: "Wagons drive so fast that they often mount the pavement to avoid the islands. One outside my house still hasn't been repaired after being demolished by a lorry.

"The traffic authorities made such a hoo-hah about the islands, now they are getting wrecked and being left. The islands haven't slowed the traffic down. "Wagons are still driving along Longsight Road at 50 or 60 miles per hour.

"Getting my car in and out my driveway is terrifying. I have lived here for 20 years and this road is diabolical now. Residents' lives are being put at risk."

Mr Warren has renewed calls for cameras to be installed on the road to encourage drivers to stick to the 40mph speed limit.

A Lancashire County Council spokesman said reinstatement of the traffic island would take place on Sunday, March 7.

He added: "The central pole in the island needs to be refitted and rewired. The order to carry out the work was placed immediately the damaged occurred, but certain arrangements have had to be made to ensure the safety of workmen and motorists before it could begin.

"A temporary bollard is currently in place."
