ANOTHER jobs bodyblow fell today with news that 40 jobs are to be axed at Wardle Storeys factory, Earby.

The redundancies at the major PVC sheeting and car trim manufacturer follows a "significant reduction" in orders, forcing the company to reduce costs, say management.

Plant manager Mike Mills said the decision to cut jobs at the Grove Mill works was regretted, but added: "Only by acting now can the long term future viability of the site be maintained."

The job losses at one of Pendle's biggest employers, with a near 400-strong workforce, follows hard on the heels of 170 redundancies announced by receivers at the Nelson Buoyant Upholstery plant where a further 300 jobs are still at risk as a buyer is sought.

Another 350 jobs will go at Colne's Lear group works which is to close.

Essex-based Wardle Storey today announced a major restructuring at the Earby factory.

In a statement today Mr Mills said the cutback would not affect the firm's Blackburn plant.

He said over recent weeks management had met union representatives to discuss the difficult trading situation and the reduction in orders.

"This has also affected our ability to sustain current manning levels and has resulted in working curtailed shift patterns," he said.

"Despite our best efforts, the situation has become worse and consequently management has had to announce a major restructuring programme."

Mr Mills said voluntary applications for redundancy were being invited and discussions were continuing with union representatives.
