IT was nearly a case of "dog-gone" when Eric the family pet was overcome by fumes during a fire at a house in Whitefield.

Now, however, firefighters are the dog's best friend after they revived the mongrel when he was discovered unconscious.

The fire crew used oxygen to resuscitate Eric.

He was found lying on an upstairs bunk bed after the family of six had escaped the blaze, which involved the central heating cupboard in the house at Tintern Avenue,

Firefighters Glyn Hough and Martin Smith administered the oxygen and brought the stricken dog round.

Bury-based leading fireman Paul Baker said: "Eric was in rather a bad way. But thankfully, after the oxygen, he perked up although he looked a bit sorry for himself."

Much of the property was heavily smoke logged following the fire. Crews spent 90 minutes at the scene on Monday night.
