RESIDENTS have been urged to blow the whistle on vandals who are repeatedly wrecking railings around a new housing estate.

Ribble Valley Council's chief engineer Graham Jagger said the vandals had already caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

The vandals bent the spokes in the Taylor Street railings and left them protruding dangerously into the street.

It is the fourth time the railings have been wrecked and now fed-up council chiefs are calling on residents to act.

Mr Jagger said: "These are attractive, traditional-style railings that have been senselessly vandalised.

"Every time it happens, we have to get workmen out straight away, before someone gets hurt. It is costing the taxpayer hundreds of pounds.

"These incidents are happening right across the road from houses, not tucked away in a corner. Someone must have seen something and we want hear from them. We will definitely pursue this matter."

Last week vandals caused more than £1,000 worth of damage when they went on a wrecking spree in the grounds of Clitheroe Castle.

They destroyed wooden benches, broke lights, dug up a bowling green and smashed dozens of beer bottles.

Their actions led to calls by Clitheroe Mayor John McGowan for their parents to be made to pay for the damage.
