JOHN Porter's parochial dream (Letters, April 8), for down-structuring Britain (or is it 'Little England' he has in mind?) to a sort of glorified 'Trumpton,' immune from the problems of the outside world, is pure utopianism.

The competitive jungle of world capitalism does not allow anybody to contract out. The country would be assailed by hostile economic forces beyond its control.

To minimise involvement in wars, Mr Porter would have to ensure that there were no telecommunications centres, no airfields and no ports.

The economy itself would need to revert to something approaching medieval turnip production, offering no prize for a prospective invader.

The only way to guarantee a secure and prosperous existence for Britain, short of being hit by a doomsday asteroid, would be for it to be part of a single world community based on common ownership.
