PARENTS went back to school to learn more about childcare, first aid and other skills in courses run by Barnado's Blackburn Family Action Project.

More than 50 parents from the Shadsworth estate were awarded certificates for completing the courses funded by Barnado's, Blackburn College and Blackburn's Single Regeneration Department.

Project worker Julie Thornborough said: "For many, these have been the first courses they have attended since leaving school and have given individuals the confidence to progress to further training and future employment."

Mother of two Tracey Wright, of Shadsworth, Blackburn, said: "It's given me the confidence to socialise with people. For the first time in my life, I can now make something of myself, even though I didn't have qualifications from my school years. I now do voluntary work, helping out with parent and toddler groups at Shadsworth Neighbourhood Centre."
