WIGAN Council are to mark the Millennium by appointing new Honorary Freemen and Aldermen.

Senior councillors are drawing up lists of possible recipients for the top civic honours.

"The Freemen will be people who have made a major contribution to the life of the Borough," said Council Leader Peter Smith.

There are a number of former councillors with a distinguished record of service who could be in line for Honorary Alderman, including former housing chairman Sam Little who served local goverment for over 40 years and was defeated at the last election.
