THE mother of twin toddlers with cerebral palsy has accused Bury Council of being "uncaring".

Mrs Amanda Racktoo (30) has been waiting nine weeks for officials to fix a step in her back garden which she says is dangerous.

She said: "There's a three-inch drop between the patio and the lawn which means that the twins, who have balance problems, cannot play out on the grass."

The trouble started after council workmen levelled the uneven patio of her home in Kirkstall Gardens, Radcliffe, in May.

She said: "They did an appalling job. It was so uneven the children were tripping over all the time. They had to come out again and improve it.

"I told the inspector about the step at the time. He came down to see it and said they would level the garden."

But after that Mrs Racktoo heard nothing. She said: "It was very frustrating, particularly in the nice weather because it meant Rhys and Reanne could not play on the lawn.

"Rhys has mild cerebral palsy which means he has walking problems and trips up a lot.

"Reanne has moderate cerebral palsy with sight problems, so again she can't really negotiate a drop in level."

Last week Mrs Racktoo phoned the council to find out what was going on - only to discover that her initial complaint had not even been logged.

"I explained the situation and asked them to call me back, but they didn't.

"I think it's shocking. It's gone on for far too long. The twins are mobile, active and happy. They want space to play but they can't."

Told of the complaint, council spokesman Miss Susan Hadcroft said that the necessary work would be done this week.

She added: "I cannot comment on the cause for the delay because the officer who dealt with it is on leave."
