REPORTS that Roy Keane, of Manchester United, is said to be demanding £40,000 a week for his services, highlight the way top-class football is heading.

He is able to stand his ground, owing to the fact that, in 12 months, he can leave under the Bosman ruling on a free transfer if he desires.

It seems like a mild form of blackmail. When men kicking a football can earn more than other top men in their fields - scientists, doctors, surgeons and even the Prime Minister - it makes you think the world is going topsy turvy.

What must the ordinary man in the street think? How many of the bread-and-butter lower league clubs would like to receive £40,000 in gate receipts each week?

The British players - some quite average - are lumbering clubs with ridiculous transfer fees and wages. Hence, the search abroad for star players, who can be purchased for a lower fee.

Coventry's Moroccan import international Hadji for example, would certainly have cost more if he had been British.
