WINNING entries to our "Holidays at Home" reporting competition for young people were published on July 27. More suggestions for local holiday fun come from runners up in the competition.

All winners and runners-up received great prizes of free swimming passes, valid for six months and three months respectively, to Waves Water Fun Centre, Blackburn and family swim tickets to Pendle Wavelengths, Nelson.

Our two secondary runners-up are both in Year 9 at Darwen Moorland High School. Rachel Greenwood advises swimming safety in your local pool and says that sleepovers are great fun for girls - "get your mates round to your house for loads of munchies and a pampering session. Bring your make-up and do each other's hair and nails - it's a real laugh." Classmate Kelly Sullivan's suggestions include ice skating, checking out your local sports centre or "renting a video with friends - and don't forget the popcorn."

Junior runners-up, both in Year 5 at St James' CE Primary School, Clitheroe, like to get out and about to local attractions. Emily Newman's choice is Pendle Heritage Centre, Barrowford, which, she says boasts three interesting features of the walled garden, the cruck barn with a collection of animals and Park Hill house.

Nikkole Bennett votes her home town of Clitheroe, a great place for a day out. The market, shops and cinema are great. The energetic will love Ribblesdale Pool and Roefield Leisure Centre, while stunning scenery can be found along the riverside at Edisford or in the view from the castle.
