TWELVE years ago John McDonald smoked 60 cigarettes a day and weighed fourteen stone.

Now the 57-year-old, from Leyland, is celebrating after completing two marathons back-to-back.

But Johnny Mac, as he is affectionately known to fellow members of Chorley Harriers, is still not satisfied.

His latest achievement, the arduous 52-mile Tour of Tameside, consisted of six races over seven days, including a half-marathon and a six-mile fell race.

The total time taken to complete the tour was six hours and 20 minutes.

John, who started running 12 years ago, said: "I used to smoke 60 a day and weighed fourteen stone.

"I saw the London Marathon and thought I could have a go."

Since then he has completed a total of 15 marathons and is a regular winner in the 'Male 55' category at races.

He added: "My ambition is to run twelve marathons during the year 2000. Now that would be something to tell my grandchildren!"
