Valerie Cowan's Web World

SPRING Hill County Primary School in Accrington first opened its doors on September 30, 1899.

A hundred years on it is planning a major celebration - with a little help from the internet.

The Exchange Street school is using its website to ask former pupils for any memories, photographs or information about days gone by. Details of the centenary celebrations are also being posted on the site.

But the site isn't just of interest to people with a direct link to the school.

It contains a wealth of information about the school's history, including some fascinating excerpts from the school's logbook, which for many years was painstakingly filled out by the head teacher every day.

It records all kinds of significant events in the school's history, from the holiday granted in 1902 because the circus was in town, to a boy being sent home to clean his clogs.

It is noted that some children died in 1914 due to an outbreak of diptheria, and that there was cause for celebration in 1932 when electric light was installed in the school.

All too often school sites have little appeal for anyone not directly involved with the school but Spring Hill's is a mine of information for anyone with an interest in local history. http://www.springhill.freeuk.com

Web technology reaches out to stroke victims

THE Stroke Association is also marking its centenary this year with the launch of a website.

The site is designed to give information for those affected by strokes, and their families and carers.

Net users can also make donations to the charity online, order publications and contact key departments electronically.

Trevor Butler from the association said: "As we mark 100 years of caring it is appropriate to use the latest technology to reach out to the people we are trying to help.

"We believe this site will open the door to a worldwide audience who can share knowledge and contribute to the association's campaign to reduce the risk of stroke and improve care for patients.

"For many stroke survivors who experience speech difficulties, the internet and e-mail may provide the ideal answer to communication without hassle."

Take a peep at Sandler's site

ADAM Sandler, whose new film Big Daddy has so far grossed more than £100million in the States, has created a six-minute animated comedy for the web. The film, The Peeper, about a middle-aged man who peers into a girl's window, will premiere tomorrow on Sandler's website and will run exclusively on the net.

Adam, star of The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy, said: "The on-line community has always been supportive of me and I wanted to give them something in return.

"I wanted to give them the ability to watch it whenever they get the urge. Long live the web!"

An insult but no injury!

JAPAN'S Fuji Bank accidentally sent out a virus-tainted e-mail that makes computers display a message calling the recipient a "big stupid jerk".

The bug was transmitted last week to investors worldwide via a memo detailing Fuji Bank's alliance with two other major Japanese banks, spokesman Hiroshi Takahashi said.

The accident did not cause damage to any computers, and the bank has apologised to all recipients, he added.

The virus, which also changed some of the names in the memo to "Dr Mountain Dew" was sent from a personal computer temporarily in use by the company, Takahashi said. "We have already done everything to get rid of the problem," Takahashi said.
