I AM writing to express my appreciation to all participants in this year's Summer Literacy Schools held throughout the borough.

Broad Oak, Coney Green, Parrenthorn, Prestwich and Radcliffe high schools hosted the literacy schools - now in their second year - and it has been pleasing to see the energy, commitment and sheer enthusiasm shown by all who have taken part.

Thanks must go to all the young people who volunteered to go back to school for an extra two weeks - there was initial scepticism that pupils would actually want to go back to school, but our young people have been motivated and eager to learn. These pupils will be well-placed to start high school, having made new friends, got to know some of their new teachers and, due to their studies, having increased confidence. This can only serve them well both now and in the future.

Thanks must also be expressed to the small army of teachers and support assistants who worked with the co-ordinators to make the literacy schools an unqualified success. The team effort between the LEA and the schools has proved that partnership works!

And the good news is that summer schools will be back next year!
