UNSTOPPABLE Burnley took over the outright lead in the Second Division for the first time this season as they grabbed their fifth win and Wigan, Luton and Notts County all dropped points.

And even though their 3-0 victory over struggling Colchester could have been even more convincing, Clarets assistant boss Sam Ellis isn't complaining.

"We're delighted to have got the 17 points already and to be in the position we are in," he said.

"The players are working hard in training to get us where we are and we're all delighted we're getting some fruits at the present time."

Burnley were head and shoulders above a limited Colchester side, who look to have a long winter in front of them.

And the Clarets' superiority was rammed home by Andy Payton's first hat-trick for the club.

"We felt we were the best team on the day and Andy Payton's always likely to score.

"It was smashing. He likes scoring goals, the more the merrier for him, and he's good at it," added Ellis.

Burnley's surge to the top of the table has been based around a run of just one defeat in eight league games and a 100 per cent record at Turf Moor.

Ellis expects the Clarets' reputation will now go before them but it's one they won't give up lightly.

"It's difficult to keep on winning at home when you have that record and that reputation but it's a nice one to have and we'll see how long it can go on," he said.

And while Bristol City will present a stiffer challenge in next weekend's heavyweight clash, Saturday's result will see Burnley go to Ashton Gate in good heart.

"When you're on a run like we are you'll face anyone with confidence," Ellis confirmed.
