Worthington Cup 3rd round: Leeds United v Blackburn Rovers - Peter White's preview

IF Leeds United suddenly decided to hang a 'For Sale' sign around Harry Kewell's neck, manager David O'Leary would probably be trampled in the rush from eager buyers.

For, in a Leeds side brimming with talent, Kewell represents the cream of the crop.

And his Premiership performances - judged by Carling Opta - mark him out as the man most likely to prove the kiss of death to Blackburn Rovers' Worthington Cup aspirations.

The rest of the Leeds gang have a lot going for them, but few boast as much as Kewell who, if he were Brazilian or represented one of the leading European nations, could look forward to ruling the football world.

As it is, with no disrespect intended, his international reputation is hardly likely to be significantly enhanced by playing for Australia.

But, at club level, there is no doubt that the 21-year-old Aussie is a winner.

Ask any Premiership manager if he would like to buy a strong, brave, quick player with an eye for goal and a top-quality left foot and the only response would be - how much?

Kewell has been instrumental in helping Leeds to the top of the Premiership and is now ready to spearhead their charge for Worthington Cup glory.

He helped inspire them to victory at Watford in their last match to take over the league leadership and clearly impressed Vicarage Road boss Graham Taylor. "I'm always hesitant to use the word 'great' because I think that only applies to a handful of players," said Taylor.

"But this guy has the potential.

"I always felt we would have problems with him and I suppose I was right.

"He's got exceptional pace and a great left foot."

Carling Opta have plotted Kewell's progress for us in the Premiership this season and, while he boasts some impressive attacking statistics, it should be noted that the Aussie does his share of defensive duties with more than two thirds of his tackles won.

In 885 minutes on the pitch, the equivalent of just under 10 full games, Kewell has racked up 44 goal attempts.

And almost a third of them have been on target, including three goals.
