TWENTY-ONE breeders from all over the country exhibited 101 birds at the Holcombe Old English Gamecock traditional New Year's Day show.

Hundreds of visitors flocked to Ramsbottom to enjoy the 157th show at the Old Dun Horse Hotel, Ramsbottom.

Trophy for best bird in show was won by Mr D L Gardiner of Stoke who took first three places in the stag class.

George Meekin of Astley again won the Oxford Centenary Challenge Trophy in the cock bird class for the third year running.

W Ross of Durham and D Stuttard of Hawkshaw won second and third cock bird classes with their exhibits.

The Sam Jackson Memorial Challenge Trophy for the hen classes went to Joe Singer of Sandbach.

He also took second prize and D P Jones of North Wales third.

The Harold Haworth Memorial Trophy for pullets went to Ben Greenwood of Haslingden.

B Smithson of Haslingden was second and George Meekin of Astley in third place.

Winner of the local class, the Tom Randle Haworth Trophy, was George Meekin with Ben Greenwood taking second and third places.

Judges were Colin Haworth of Edenfield, Stanley Ribchester of Rossendale and Evan Hughes of Oswestry.
