Mr Connolly enjoyed walking, most days covering six to eight miles.

Andrew said: "He was still fit and active for his age and enjoyed walking around the area where he had very many friends of all ages. He had never been ill in his life and just passed away in his sleep. "

Mr Connolly attended Mass every Sunday at St James the Less, Rawtenstall, where a funeral service will be held on Friday with a Requiem Mass at 10.30am.

Mr Connolly used to be a collector for the St Vincent de Paul Catholic charity and donations can be made to that cause via Fr David Lupton at St James the Less.
