THE Mayor of Clitheroe today spoke of his disgust at vandals who targeted the town's nativity scene in a three-day millennium wrecking spree.

And Councillor Alan Yearing said he was sure most people in Clitheroe shared his feelings towards those responsible for smashing the figures which go on show annually in a crib erected at Clitheroe Castle gates.

He went on: "It is sad to think that in future years greater security measures may be required because I'm sure the majority of people in Clitheroe will share our revulsion and disgust."

Members of Clitheroe's Town Council and Round Table, who are responsible for the crib, have been angered by the vandalism towards the structure, which has been used for almost 50 years after being donated by several churches in the town. The broken plaster and fibreglass figures - two shepherds, a wise man and a donkey - have now been sent off to manufacturers in the hope that they can be mended.

Coun Yearing went on: "I am disappointed that some members of this community felt that in order to enjoy themselves they had to centre their attention on the crib.

"For most of the holiday period it has been true to say that the scene has been respected but unfortunately in the last few days figures have been removed and damaged to the extent that they may not be repairable.

"Light bulbs have also been removed from the nearby Christmas tree and will also have to be replaced at considerable expense before next year."

Clitheroe police are investigating the damage but it is believed that CCTV cameras covering the area were not working and have not captured the incident.

A police spokesman added that the town council had been warned to install a perspex screen to protect the crib following earlier attacks.

The future of the crib is due to be discussed by the town council.
